WooCommerce does not give you a way to let a customer type a name, a short gift message, or an engraving line onto a product page. You need a plugin for that. This post compares three real WooCommerce product personalization plugins, PPOM, Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce, and Product Addons for WooCommerce by Acowebs, on what each one actually lets you build for free, what it charges for, and how current it is. The short version: PPOM has the richest free feature set, Advanced Product Fields is the lightest and has no paid tier at all, and Acowebs covers the widest range of native field types.
All three add the same basic thing, a custom input field on the single product page whose value gets saved with the order, but they differ in which parts of that feature are actually free, what WordPress and PHP versions they need, and how they’re set up. Here’s how they stack up before getting into the detail.
| Plugin | Best for | Price | Last updated |
|---|---|---|---|
| PPOM | Conditional logic and per-option pricing, free | Free, Pro from $99/year | October 7, 2026 |
| Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce | A fully free plugin with no upsell at all | Free, no premium tier | October 7, 2026 |
| Product Addons for WooCommerce (Acowebs) | Widest native free field list (date, color, URL) | Free, Pro from $49/year | October 5, 2026 |
PPOM (Personalized Product Option Manager)
PPOM, built by Themeisle, is pitched directly at this use case. Its free version adds text, textarea, select, radio, checkbox, date, email, number, and hidden inputs to any product, and it’s one of the only plugins in this comparison that includes dynamic per-option pricing, conditional logic (show or hide a field based on another field’s value), and input validation (min/max length, input masking, custom error messages) all in the free tier.
- Price: Free, Pro from $99/year
- Requires: WordPress 6.2+, PHP 7.2+
- Last updated: October 7, 2026
Setup is straightforward: activate the plugin, then go to WooCommerce > PPOM Settings to create a field group. Add a Text field for a short name or monogram, or a Textarea for a longer gift message, set a character limit under its validation options, and assign the group to a single product or an entire category. There’s no need to touch the product edit screen itself unless you want to override the group for one product.
The catch is the version requirement: PPOM needs WordPress 6.2 or newer, which is a notably higher floor than the other two plugins here. If a store is running an older WordPress core, that’s a core update to schedule before this plugin is an option. The free tier also gates the more elaborate inputs, audio and video selection, bulk-quantity pricing, chained dropdowns, behind the $99/year Pro plan, but none of those matter for a plain personalization or engraving field.
Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce
Advanced Product Fields, from Studio Wombat, is the odd one out here in a good way: it has no premium version to upsell into at all. Its backend builder is deliberately modeled on Advanced Custom Fields, so anyone who has used ACF will recognize the layout immediately. It offers ten field types (text, textarea, email, URL, number, select, checkbox, radio, true/false, and a static paragraph block), supports conditional logic, and lets a field add a flat fee to the product price, all in the one free version.
- Price: Free, no premium tier
- Requires: WordPress 4.5+, PHP 7.0+
- Last updated: October 7, 2026
To set it up, install and activate it from Plugins > Add New, then open the new WooCommerce > Product Fields menu and create a Custom Field Group. Add a Text field for a name or short engraving line, turn on the price add-on if you want to charge for it, and set which products or categories the group applies to. The plugin’s own developers note the frontend script is around 7KB, and it’s built to work with both simple and variable products over AJAX, which is worth testing if the products needing personalization also have size or color variations.
The real limitation is the field list itself: there’s no file upload field and no dedicated date or color picker, in the free version or anywhere else, because there’s no paid version to add them in. For a plain text or dropdown-based personalization field this doesn’t matter. For something like a custom photo upload for a printed mug, this plugin simply can’t do it, full stop, which matters more than it sounds since other product-page customizations, like size charts, run into the same free-plugin ceiling.
Product Addons for WooCommerce (Acowebs)
Product Addons for WooCommerce from Acowebs has the highest rating of the three (98%, from 470 reviews) and the broadest native field list in its free version: text, number, radio, checkbox, select, textarea, date (HTML5 picker), color (HTML5 picker), hidden, password, email, URL, a separator, and a two-column grid layout, plus paragraph and header tags for on-page instructions.
- Price: Free, Pro from $49/year
- Requires: WordPress 4.0+, PHP 7.2+
- Last updated: October 5, 2026
Setup differs from the other two in one notable way: it adds its own top-level admin menu rather than tucking settings under the WooCommerce menu, so look for it directly in the WordPress sidebar after activation. From there, the drag-and-drop builder lets you add a Text or Textarea field, lay it out next to a Header tag that explains what the engraving or message is for, and assign the group to a product.
The honest limitation: the plugin’s own description is explicit that per-option pricing, conditional logic, file uploads, and image or color-swatch selection are reserved for the $49/year Pro version. The free tier here is the widest in raw field count, but if the plan is to charge extra for the personalization itself, or to only show the field when another option is selected, that’s a paid upgrade, not a free feature, for this plugin specifically.
How to Choose a WooCommerce Product Personalization Plugin
- If you want conditional logic and per-option pricing without paying anything, use PPOM. It’s the only one of the three that bundles both for free, as long as the site already runs WordPress 6.2 or can be updated to it.
- If the priority is staying on something with zero upsells, no license key, and the smallest possible footprint, and you don’t need file uploads, use Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce.
- If you want the widest range of native field types for free, including a date and color picker, and don’t mind paying later for conditional logic or uploads, use Acowebs Product Addons for WooCommerce.
- If customers need to upload their own photo for the personalization, none of these three free tiers support it. That’s either a Pro upgrade on PPOM or Acowebs, or, for a more involved multi-step builder like a configurator with live pricing, a custom-built option. We walked through exactly that kind of build in a case study on a multi-step WooCommerce product builder we built for a video editing service.
Whichever plugin you pick, the personalization value gets stored as order item meta by default in all three, so it shows up on the order detail screen, the customer’s order confirmation email, and any packing slip plugin that reads order item data, without extra configuration. That’s also where a checkout-side custom field would end up too, if the personalization needs to be collected at checkout instead of on the product page.
None of our own plugins fit this particular comparison; we don’t have a generic product-fields plugin on WordPress.org, so there’s no honest case for including one here. If your store needs field logic more complex than any of these three handle, for example, pricing that depends on a formula, or a multi-step configuration flow, our WooCommerce development team builds that directly rather than stacking plugins to get there.
FAQ
Do I need to write code to add a personalization field?
No. All three plugins add the field through a WordPress admin screen. Writing code is only needed if you want behavior none of them support out of the box.
Will the customer’s personalized text show up in my order emails?
Yes. In all three plugins, the field value saves as order item meta, which WooCommerce includes in the order detail screen, admin order emails, and the customer’s order confirmation email by default.
Can I charge extra for an engraving or personalization option?
With PPOM and Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce, yes, for free. Both support adding a price increase tied to a field’s value in their free versions. With Acowebs Product Addons for WooCommerce, extra pricing is a Pro-only feature.
Do these plugins work with variable products that already have size or color options?
Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce specifically states support for variable products over AJAX. PPOM and Acowebs also support variable products, but test the exact combination of variations and a personalization field on a staging site before relying on it at checkout.
What if customers need to upload a photo instead of typing text?
None of the three plugins support file uploads in their free version. PPOM and Acowebs both add it in their paid tiers; Advanced Product Fields for WooCommerce has no upload field in any version.
