How to Add an ‘Only X Left in Stock’ Message to WooCommerce (4 Plugins Compared)

WooCommerce does not show stock urgency by default. Here are 4 real plugins that add an Only X left in stock message to product pages, compared on price, requirements, and maintenance.

Showing “Only 3 left in stock” on a WooCommerce product page is one of the cheapest conversion tricks in ecommerce, but WooCommerce itself only gives you a generic “In stock” or “Out of stock” label with no urgency built in. This post compares four real plugins that add a dynamic, threshold-based low stock message to your product pages: Live Stock Countdown, WPC Smart Messages, Advanced Custom Stock Status, and Show Stock Status for WooCommerce. If you just want the short version, Advanced Custom Stock Status is the most direct fix for a single product page message, WPC Smart Messages is the one to reach for if you want that message tied into a wider on-site messaging system.

Most “best plugin” roundups about WooCommerce urgency cover sale countdown timers or back-in-stock notifications, both real features we’ve covered separately. This is a narrower question: how do you tell a shopper, right on the product page, that the item in front of them is running low, using the real stock number WooCommerce already tracks? Searching that exact phrasing turns up almost nothing from the big WordPress sites, just code-snippet tutorials and a handful of small, underdiscussed plugins. That’s the gap this post fills.

Quick Comparison

Plugin Best for Price Last updated
Live Stock Countdown A free, no-settings way to test the idea fast Free May 2025
WPC Smart Messages Combining low stock alerts with other on-site messaging Free October 2026
Advanced Custom Stock Status Rewriting WooCommerce’s own stock text directly Free May 2026
Show Stock Status for WooCommerce Showing stock numbers on shop and category pages, not just single products Free September 2026

Live Stock Countdown

  • Price: Free
  • Requires: WordPress 5.0+, PHP 7.4+
  • Last updated: May 2025

Live Stock Countdown does exactly one thing: it prints an “Only X left in stock” message on the single product page, for both simple and variable products, and hides itself automatically once stock climbs back above the threshold or the product goes fully out of stock. There’s no dashboard screen, no options page, nothing to configure through WordPress admin at all.

Setup is activation only. You install it, activate it, and the message appears on product pages right away, styled with a small emoji by default. The one thing you can’t do through the UI is change the threshold: it ships hardcoded to 5 units, and you have to open the plugin file directly and edit the $threshold variable in code to change it. Styling works the same way, through the plugin’s stylesheet rather than a color picker.

The honest limitation is maintenance. It’s on its first and only release, last touched in May 2025, well past a year with no update. That’s not automatically a dealbreaker since the plugin does so little there’s not much surface area to break, but editing a plugin file directly means a code change like that gets wiped out if the plugin ever does update.

WPC Smart Messages for WooCommerce

  • Price: Free
  • Requires: WordPress 5.9+, PHP not specified by the plugin (standard WooCommerce PHP support applies)
  • Last updated: October 2026

WPC Smart Messages for WooCommerce is built as a general on-site messaging engine, not a low-stock plugin specifically, and that’s the real differentiator. Stock level is just one of the conditions it can trigger on, alongside date and time windows, user role, product category and tags, cart totals, and sale status. It can calculate stock-based messages in real time and place them before or after the price, the add-to-cart button, the product summary, or several other positions on the page, and the same message engine also works on the cart, checkout, and shop/archive pages.

Setup happens from the WordPress dashboard: go to Smart Messages in the admin menu after activating, create a new message, set its condition to stock quantity below a number you choose, write the message text (shortcodes, icons, and images are all supported), and pick where on the page it should appear. Because it’s a full condition builder rather than a single toggle, the first message takes longer to set up than Live Stock Countdown’s zero-config approach.

The honest tradeoff is installing a bigger tool than the job strictly requires. If low stock urgency is the only message you’ll ever need, the extra screens for user-role targeting and checkout messaging are unused weight. It’s the right call if you already plan to run promotional banners or shipping-threshold nudges on the same store, since one plugin then covers all of it instead of stacking several single-purpose ones.

Advanced Custom Stock Status

  • Price: Free
  • Requires: WordPress 5.8+, PHP not specified by the plugin
  • Last updated: May 2026

Advanced Custom Stock Status takes a different angle: instead of adding a new message alongside WooCommerce’s stock text, it lets you rewrite WooCommerce’s own built-in stock labels directly, including the exact “Only %s left in stock” string WooCommerce already generates when a product’s stock drops to or below its low stock threshold. You can set a different color for each status (in stock, low stock, backorder, out of stock) and apply the same rules globally or override them per product.

Setup goes through WooCommerce > Settings > Custom Stock, a dedicated tab the plugin adds. From there you edit the default text for each stock state and assign colors, and the same fields also show up on the Simple and Variation product edit screens for per-product wording. It also ships a shortcode (woo_custom_stock_status) for repositioning the text, plus optional extras like a learn-more link and an estimated delivery date appended after the message.

The limitation worth knowing: it changes WooCommerce’s native stock text rather than adding a separate banner, so it relies entirely on the low stock threshold already set under WooCommerce > Settings > Inventory. If that global threshold is wrong for your catalog, every product inherits the same number unless overridden individually, there’s no per-message condition logic the way WPC Smart Messages has.

Show Stock Status for WooCommerce

  • Price: Free
  • Requires: WordPress 4.9+, PHP 7.2+
  • Last updated: September 2026

Show Stock Status for WooCommerce solves a genuinely different problem than the other three. It’s built to show the stock quantity on shop, category, and any other archive page where products appear in a loop, not just on the single product page. If a shopper is browsing your category grid and never clicks into an individual product, the other three plugins on this list never reach them: their messages only fire once someone lands on the product page itself.

Setup is activation only, same as Live Stock Countdown. There’s no settings screen; once active, stock quantity appears under each product wherever WooCommerce renders a product loop. The plugin’s own listing credits a Business Bloomer code tutorial as its basis, which tracks with how narrow and single-purpose it is.

The honest limitation is that it shows a plain quantity number, not a styled urgency message, with no threshold logic to hide it when stock is healthy or highlight it only when low. It’s a genuinely useful complement to one of the other three rather than a replacement: use this on shop and category pages, and Advanced Custom Stock Status or WPC Smart Messages on the product page itself, for urgency messaging at both stages of a shopper’s path.

How to Pick

  1. Want to test whether urgency messaging even moves your conversion rate first? Start with Live Stock Countdown. It installs in thirty seconds and comes out just as fast if it doesn’t help.
  2. Want the cleanest single-purpose fix with a real settings screen? Use Advanced Custom Stock Status.
  3. Already running other on-site messaging, like shipping thresholds or sale banners? Use WPC Smart Messages so stock urgency lives in the same system instead of a separate plugin.
  4. Most of your traffic browsing the shop or category grid before clicking into a product? Pair Show Stock Status for WooCommerce with one of the other three so urgency shows up earlier.
  5. Theme already shows stock status but doesn’t highlight low stock distinctly? Check Advanced Custom Stock Status’s color options before reaching for a second plugin.

FAQ

Does WooCommerce show a low stock message by default?

WooCommerce has a built-in low stock threshold under WooCommerce > Settings > Inventory, and once stock drops to or below it, WooCommerce does generate an “Only X left in stock” string internally. Most themes just don’t style or surface it distinctly from the plain “In stock” label, which is why these plugins exist: to make that message visible and give it urgency, or replace it with your own wording and logic.

Will running two of these plugins at once cause duplicate messages?

Yes, if both target the same position on the same page. Advanced Custom Stock Status and Live Stock Countdown both touch the single product page’s stock area, so running them together usually means two messages stacked on top of each other. Show Stock Status for WooCommerce is the exception, since it only touches shop and category page loops, so it’s safe to pair with any one of the other three.

Can I set a different low stock threshold for different products?

Yes, through WooCommerce itself. It lets you override the low stock threshold per product on the Inventory tab of each product’s edit screen. Advanced Custom Stock Status and Live Stock Countdown both read from that same setting (Live Stock Countdown’s threshold needs a code edit to change at all), while WPC Smart Messages lets you build a separate condition with its own quantity number if you want messaging independent of WooCommerce’s native threshold.

Does a low stock message affect checkout quantity limits?

No. All four plugins here are purely display plugins: they change what a shopper sees, not what they can buy. Capping how many units a customer can purchase, or triggering a backorder rule from low stock, is a different feature covered by inventory management plugins rather than any of these four.

None of these four plugins are built by ConicPlex, and none of our own plugins handle stock messaging, so there’s nothing of ours to recommend here. If your store needs urgency logic tied to something more specific than stock quantity, like a custom threshold per shipping zone or a message that also checks order history, that’s a custom build rather than a plugin pick. Our WordPress plugin development team builds that kind of logic directly when an off-the-shelf option doesn’t fit.

Low stock messaging is one piece of a bigger conversion picture. If you’re also running sale events, pair it with a countdown timer for the sale itself, and if customers ask to be notified when something restocks, a back-in-stock notification plugin covers the other side of the same problem. For broader WooCommerce setup and custom development, see our WooCommerce development page, and for a full ecommerce build rather than a single feature, our ecommerce industry page covers how we approach that work.
