How to Add WooCommerce Age Verification by Category

Four real plugins compared for restricting a single WooCommerce category to age verified customers, with real pricing and setup steps for each.

If you sell vape gear, alcohol, CBD, or anything else with a legal age minimum alongside regular products, you do not need to put your whole WooCommerce store behind an age gate. What you actually need is WooCommerce age verification for a specific product category, so the checkbox, calendar, or ID check only shows up where it’s legally required. This post compares four real plugins and extensions that do exactly that: WooCommerce.com’s own Age Verification Popup, the free Age Verification System for WooCommerce, Age Gate, and AgeChecker.Net. The short version: if you want category targeting without hunting through a stale free plugin, the official Woo extension is the cleanest $40-a-year fix; if the checkbox needs to hold up under FDA or state tobacco/alcohol rules, AgeChecker.Net’s identity verification is the one built for that.

Why “Just Install an Age Gate Plugin” Isn’t the Whole Answer

Search “age verification plugin WordPress” and you’ll land on roundups covering sitewide popups: the kind that greets every visitor on every page, whether they’re buying a bottle of wine or reading your shipping policy. That’s a reasonable setup for a store where everything is age-restricted. It’s the wrong setup for a general store with one or two restricted categories, where gating the homepage just adds friction for customers who were never going to see a restricted product anyway. The plugins below differ mainly in how cleanly they let you scope the check to specific categories, products, or pages instead of the whole site, and that’s the actual decision this post is trying to help with.

WooCommerce Age Verification by Category: Plugins Compared

Plugin Best for Price Last updated
Age Verification Popup (WooCommerce.com) Woo-native category targeting without relying on a stale free plugin $40/year Not published on the sales page (v1.5.0, tested to WooCommerce 10.9.4)
Age Verification System for WooCommerce Free, built specifically for per-category/per-product gating Free July 18, 2024
Age Gate Sites that need age gating beyond just WooCommerce content Free September 12, 2026
AgeChecker.Net Regulated categories (vape, alcohol, firearms) that need real identity verification $25/month + $0.50 per accepted verification August 3, 2026

Age Verification Popup (WooCommerce.com)

Age Verification Popup is sold directly by WooCommerce.com, which matters here because it’s the one option in this list built by the same team that owns the checkout you’re trying to protect. Its restriction scope setting lets you apply the check to the whole website or to specific products, categories, or pages, so a vape category can require verification while the rest of the catalog stays open. Verification methods go beyond a yes/no button too: you can require an entered age, a full date of birth, a plain confirmation checkbox, or Yoti’s selfie-based age estimation if you want something closer to real identity checking without a per-transaction fee.

  • Price: $40/year (2-year license at $64)
  • Requires: the extension’s own spec sheet lists WordPress 6.5+ and PHP 7.4+, though an older field on the same page still shows WordPress 4.6 and PHP 5.2, so don’t take either number as the hard floor without testing
  • Last updated: not published on the sales page (current version 1.5.0, tested against WooCommerce 10.9.4)

Setup runs through the extension’s own settings panel once it’s installed: pick the restriction scope (category, product, or site-wide), choose a verification method, set the minimum age, and configure where a failed check redirects the visitor. You can also set whether logged-in users or specific IPs skip the popup, and whether it displays as a centered overlay or a banner above the footer. The one real gap: WooCommerce.com doesn’t publish a last-updated date anywhere on the product page, which is an odd omission for a $40/year extension, and the contradictory minimum-version fields suggest the listing itself hasn’t been fully cleaned up even though the plugin is being actively tested against current WooCommerce releases.

Age Verification System for WooCommerce

Age Verification System for WooCommerce is the only plugin in this comparison built from the ground up around this exact use case rather than adding it as one option among many. Its settings page is organized into General, Style, Privacy, and Texts tabs, and the General tab is where the category targeting actually lives: you set the minimum age, how long a verified visitor is remembered, and then place the popup on “any product, product-category, page or post you want.” You can also show a product image inside the popup itself, which is a small touch most of the others skip.

  • Price: Free
  • Requires: PHP 7.0+ (no WordPress minimum is stated on the listing)
  • Last updated: July 18, 2024

Setup is a straight install-and-activate, then an “Age Verification” tab appears in the admin menu where all four settings tabs live. There’s no separate category-rules screen beyond that, which keeps it simple for a store with one or two restricted categories and would get tedious fast across a dozen.

The honest limitation is maintenance. The plugin hasn’t shipped an update since July 2024, and its WordPress.org rating sits at 60 percent from only four reviews, a small enough sample that it’s hard to tell whether that reflects a real pattern of bugs or just a couple of unlucky setups. For the one plugin purpose-built for this exact job, that combination is worth weighing against the $40/year official extension before committing a production store to it.

Age Gate

Age Gate isn’t a WooCommerce plugin at all; it’s a general content age-restriction tool with 40,000 active installs that happens to work fine on product pages because, to WordPress, a product page is just another piece of content. That general-purpose design is actually its strength if your site mixes restricted WooCommerce products with restricted blog posts, videos, or other pages, since one plugin covers all of it instead of needing a separate WooCommerce-only tool.

  • Price: Free
  • Requires: WordPress 6.0+, PHP 7.4+
  • Last updated: September 12, 2026

After activating, you configure everything from the “Age Gate” admin section, and the Access tab is the one to check first: it decides whether the gate applies to the entire site or only to “selected content.” Switch it to selected content and a checkbox appears on the edit screen for individual pages, posts, and products, letting you turn the gate on per item. The plugin also respects per-item age overrides, bot and crawler bypass so search indexing isn’t affected, and a cache-bypass mode for sites running a caching plugin.

The real limitation shows up at scale. There’s no bulk “apply to this entire category” switch; selected-content mode is a checkbox you tick on each product individually. For a handful of restricted SKUs that’s a five-minute job. For a category with 200 products, it becomes the kind of task you’d want to script with a WooCommerce hook instead of clicking through the admin by hand.

AgeChecker.Net

AgeChecker.Net is a different category of product from the other three. It’s not a popup that takes someone’s word for their birthdate; it’s an identity verification service built to satisfy FDA, state, and federal age-restriction rules for industries like vape, tobacco, alcohol, and firearms, where a checkbox alone isn’t considered compliant. The service checks against identity networks and a database of previously verified customers, and says it clears over 90 percent of customers instantly, with the remaining few uploading a photo ID that a live team reviews, according to its own product description.

  • Price: Free plugin; the AgeChecker.Net service costs $25/month plus $0.50 per accepted verification, with no listed contract or transaction minimum
  • Requires: WordPress 4.4+ (no PHP minimum stated)
  • Last updated: August 3, 2026

Setup is less “configure a popup” and more “connect an account.” You create an AgeChecker.Net account and enter billing details, then go to WooCommerce’s Settings, open the Integration tab, and find the AgeChecker.Net panel there. Enter your store name and the API key from the Websites tab of your AgeChecker.Net dashboard, save, and the service hooks into your checkout. If your theme or checkout page builder has customized the order button, you’ll need to right-click it, inspect the element, and copy its CSS selector into the plugin settings so AgeChecker.Net knows where to attach the verification step.

The limitation is cost and fit. The $25 base fee plus per-verification charge adds up fast for a high-volume category, and it’s genuinely more than most stores need if local law only requires a good-faith age confirmation rather than ID-level proof. Save it for the categories where “I promise I’m 21” legitimately isn’t good enough.

How to Pick

  1. If you run a general WooCommerce store with one or two age-restricted categories and want it done cleanly without touching a stale plugin, use the official Age Verification Popup extension from WooCommerce.com.
  2. If budget is the deciding factor and you only need to gate a handful of products, Age Verification System for WooCommerce does the job for free, as long as you’re comfortable with a plugin that hasn’t been updated since mid-2024.
  3. If your site mixes WooCommerce products with other age-restricted content like articles or videos, use Age Gate so you’re not running two separate age-gating plugins.
  4. If you sell vape, alcohol, tobacco, or firearms and need to satisfy an actual regulatory age-verification requirement rather than a polite checkbox, use AgeChecker.Net and budget for the per-verification fee.
  5. If none of these fit your exact workflow, for example gating a category only during certain hours or combining it with a custom compliance flow, that’s a case for custom WooCommerce development rather than forcing a stock plugin to do something it wasn’t built for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does WooCommerce have a built-in age verification feature?
No. WooCommerce core has no age-gating option of any kind, for a single product, a category, or the whole store. Every option in this comparison is a plugin or extension on top of it.

Can I restrict the age check to one category instead of my whole site?
Yes, with the right plugin. The official WooCommerce.com extension and Age Verification System for WooCommerce both let you choose specific categories or products directly in their settings. Age Gate can do it too, but only by checking a box on each product individually rather than selecting a whole category at once.

Is a “Yes, I’m over 18” checkbox legally enough for alcohol or vape sales?
That depends entirely on your product, state, and country, and this isn’t legal advice. Some jurisdictions accept a simple confirmation; others require real identity verification for specific product categories. If you’re not sure which rule applies to you, that’s exactly the gap a service like AgeChecker.Net is built to close.

Will an age verification popup hurt my SEO?
Not if the plugin excludes crawlers from the check, which is standard across this category. Age Gate and the WooCommerce.com extension both bypass known bots like Googlebot so your pages still get indexed normally.

Do these plugins work with caching plugins like WP Rocket?
Mostly, with caveats. Age Gate has a dedicated cache-bypass mode you need to enable if you run a caching plugin, and it’s worth testing any of these four after turning your cache on, since a cached page can otherwise show the popup to a visitor who already passed it.

None of ConicPlex’s own plugins handle age verification, so there’s no in-house option to slot into this comparison honestly. If your store needs something none of these four quite cover, our WooCommerce development team builds custom checkout logic directly, and our plugin development service covers the same if you’d rather have it as a standalone plugin you control. For related conditional-checkout work, see how we compared plugins for restricting cash on delivery by pincode and for hiding a shipping method by product category, both of which use the same category-based conditional logic as age gating. Stores in regulated product categories are common across our ecommerce client work, and this kind of narrow compliance requirement comes up more often than a generic “best WooCommerce plugins” list would suggest.
